Phillies 5 ½ Out as Brignac, Pen Continue to Impress!!

Fire sale in July???  Ummmm, I don’t THINK so.  Our Phillies are 5.5 games out of first and the bullpen is getting better by the minute.  There are a LOT of positives coming into this Atlanta series.  Let’s Review:

Last night, our ace Cole Hamels, who coming into the game, has permitted just one earned run in his last three outings spanning 22 2-3 innings while striking out 26. He fanned a season-high 11 while yielding five hits over eight innings in Philadelphia's 3-0 victory over San Diego on Wednesday.  Last night, all he did was go 7 scoreless while scattering 5 hits and striking out 7.  Is Hamels in a zone?  Yeah, very much so.  Those numbers are TOPS in MLB at the moment.

Howard gave the Phillies a lead with his 12th HR early in the game.  And that was all Hamels needed.  My new favorite bullpen ace, Diekman came in for the 8th and struck out the side – in between base hits.  But it was still a very boss performance on the road against the hot Braves.

Unfortunately, that 1 run was all the Phillies could muster, and closer J Papelbon ran into a little bit of bad luck and blew his first save since his first appearance in 2014.  A couple very weak hit balls had eyes and found space, and JP found himself with a blown save.  That sucked for several reasons, but to not get Hamels the win after another commanding performance, is brutal.

But Defratus, Hollands, and Bastardo came in for the 10th – 13th innings, with Bastardo going the last 2, and the bullpen came up HUGE again holding Atlanta scoreless until Phila found their bats in extra innings.

Ben Revere led off the 13th with a hot shot up the middle, then proceeded to steal 2nd base, and advanced to 3rd on Rollins’ fly ball to right.  That is AWESOME base running in late innings – duplicated last night by Parkland area Hot Shot, “Lightning Landon”, who showed the same savvy base running skills in his final frame, by doing the same as Ben Revere while scoring the winning run for his Junior League Trojans last night .  Utley was then walked and Howard ripped a grounder that was too hard for Freddie Freeman to handle and Revere scored from 3rd.  Byrd singled and then Reid Brignac continued his torrid hitting pace and ripped a 2-run triple to secure the Phillies win as they win game #1 of this road trip 6-1.

Tonight, the job gets a lot tougher as we face Ervin Santana who has great numbers in his only 2 outings vs Phila – including an April game where he fanned 11 Phillies in only 6 innings en route to a 9-6 Braves win.

Let’s get to the ballpark and get those TV’s on this evening – crack a nice cold beer or iced tea – and root this team in!!!  Hopefully my headline tomorrow will read – “PHILLIES NOW ONLY 4.5 GAMES OUT OF FIRST PLACE”!!!!!!!
