After a month of speculation and reporting, the Eagles have finally made it official. On Thursday the Eagles announced they have signed QB Dennis Dixon to a two-year contract. The 28 year old spent the 2012 season on the Super Bowl Champions, Baltimore Ravens practice squad.
The 6’3” 200lb quarterback is re-united with a old friend, new Eagles head coach Chip Kelly as he played under Kelly when he was the offensive coordinator in 2007 when Dixon was a senior at the University of Oregon where he posted over 2100 yards through the air 29(9 rushing) total touchdowns and a QB rating of 161.2. That season he was named to the All pac 10 team, Pac 10 Offensive player of the year and a finalist for the Davey O’Brien award(top quarterback in college football).
Dixon was drafted in the 5th round in the 2008 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers where he was on the team from 2008-2011 where he then was picked by the Ravens in 2012 and signed to a practice squad contract. In 4 games(3 starts) Dixon recorded a 2-1 record 402yds 2(1 rushing)Total TD, 2 ints and a 71.4 QB rating and one game winning drive.
The move makes sense to bring in someone who knows the offense and has had success in the system. Right now he looks to be the 3rd string QB that is until the Eagles make a decision closer to draft day on moving QB Nick Foles and could compete for the backup position.
