S Nate Allen To Start... For Now
Since day one that Safety Earl Wolff was drafted by the Eagles in the 5th round in last April's draft, all anyone has been saying that this kid is going to be something special. He got to show some of his talent in the preseason and soon will get a chance to show what he can do in only five days when the Eagles kickoff the regular season against the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football, but not as the starter.
When Eagles Head Coach Chip Kelly met with the media on Wednesday the first question he was asked,"Who is your starting safety?" With no hesitation he came out and said, "Nate(Allen)." But even though Allen is the starter he will have Wolff not far behind him.
"Earl(Wolff) has played very well throughout camp and we are impressed with what he has done," Kelly said. "But right now at this time Nate(Allen) we feel is just a little bit better."
Kelly went on to say that they plan to get Wolff involved in the gameplan and get him some playing time in some way or fashion. They don't have a set package or plays specificaly for the rookie but that they know that they need to get him in the game. Right now can really only see him coming in in Dime situations. The Eagles lack depth in the CB position and will move Chung up in the slot at CB with Wolff being the team's last line of defense along with other various blitz packages and schemes.
Wolff was a first team All-ACC honoree as a senior at NC State finishing his collegiate career with 400 tackles(4th in school history) seven interceptions, 14 pass breakups and eight force fumbles(3rd in school history). He has even made an impact on special teams with 25 tackles This kid has shown the potential to be a playmaker.
That just shows that like many people have said that Wolff will be the starting safety before the season is said and done. They don't want to throw the young kid to the wolves(pun intended) and let him get eaten alive out there. Not only will it hurt the team but also his confidence and moral. But for right now we have the former 2nd round pick Nate Allen.
The 4th year veteran, Allen has played in 43 games(38 starts) while recording 216 total tackles(155 solo), 2 sacks, 5 interceptions, and 1 force fumble in his career as an Eagle. And this possibly could be his last....
News and Notes
-The burning question since the Eagles finalized their 53 man roster last week was what were the deciding factors in some players making the squad over others such as LB Casey Matthews or WR Jeff Maehl over the likes of WR Emmanuel Acho and WR Greg Salas and Chip Kelly answered it.
"Special Teams, special teams, special teams!" Kelly said. "When we were looking at the backend of our roster and the final spots with the position battles, we looked on how each player was able to contribute on special teams."
-Along with the decision to have Nate Allen as the starting safety, Chip Kelly went on to say that CB Bradley Fletcher and CB Cary Williams will be starting on the outside with CB Brandon Boykin playing in the nickel.
-An injury update on TE/FB James Casey. Kelly went on to say that he should be able to go on Monday and will practice this week.
-Redskins QB Robert Griffin III spoke to the media on Wednesday in a conference call on a various of topics and one was brought up about if he idolized Michael Vick growing up when he was playing this game.
"Michael(Vick) was definitely one of those players that you watched on Sunday. He is one of those guys that helped pave the path for quarterbacks like myself to show franchises that with our style we can play in this league. I have the upmost respect for him and look forward to facing him on Monday."
